INDIA’S LIVING FOREST HERITAGE
Sacred Groves Database
To support long-term protection and informed decision-making, Sacred Earth Trust offers a Sacred Grove Database a living repository that brings together ecological data, cultural narratives, spatial information, and governance histories. This database is designed as both a conservation tool and a knowledge archive, supporting research, policy dialogue, education, and community advocacy. Importantly, it treats sacred groves not as anonymous green patches, but as named, storied places with distinct identities and relationships.

ABOUT THE RESEARCH
Four Years of Field Documentation
Since 2020, our field teams have traversed the Indian subcontinent to document the silent sentinels of our ecological heritage. Our database is the result of rigorous on-ground surveys across all 28 states, capturing the intricate relationship between local communities and their sacred forests. We have meticulously recorded GPS coordinates, floral diversity, and the unique cultural taboos that have protected these groves for centuries.
The data portal offers an unprecedented level of detail, including state-wise qualitative write-ups, georeferenced maps, and structured Excel datasets designed for academic precision. Every entry is accompanied by high-resolution photographic documentation, ensuring that the visual and spatial reality of these groves is preserved for future generations of researchers and conservationists.
State-wise write-ups
In-depth qualitative reports on regional grove traditions.
Interactive Maps
Precise GPS boundaries and spatial distribution analysis.
Research Data (Excel)
Clean, structured datasets for ecological modeling.
Photo Documentation
Visual evidence of biodiversity and cultural artifacts.
